The Boston Celtics are in a very strange position at the moment. They just won an NBA championship as recently as 2024, but they have since largely reconstructed their roster due to salary cap issues. Now, they are in the process of fielding trade offers for Jaylen Brown.

Whether or not the Celtics actually move Brown remains to be seen. They included him in a trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Milwaukee Bucks ultimately dealt Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat instead. Boston is still shopping Brown, but there is no guarantee he actually gets moved.

Assuming the C’s keep Brown (which is probably a 50-50 shot at this point), they will once again be entering a season with a Jayson Tatum and Brown nucleus, although this past year, Tatum missed the first five months while recovering from a torn Achilles.

Regardless, the Celtics displayed in the playoffs that they are not quite ready to win another title just yet, as they were bounced in the first round. Yes, Boston has plenty of young talent that is still developing, but it also needs to add some proven veterans to bolster its chance of a deep postseason run.

It will be relatively slim pickings for the Celtics in free agency, as they don’t exactly have much financial wiggle room, but Nik Land of CelticsBlog has linked Boston to a rather intriguing option: Collin Sexton.

“Despite not being able to play meaningful basketball for a while now, I’ve always liked the relentless nature and competitive stamina that Sexton brings every night,” Land wrote. “The scoring guard has had four straight seasons of at least 39% from three as his volume from there continues to grow. At 27 years old, he enters unrestricted free agency with what doesn’t seem to be a robust market. Boston could benefit from this and bring him in on a smaller deal.”

Sexton split the 2025-26 campaign between the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls, averaging 15.4 points and 3.3 assists over 23.7 minutes per game on 48.5/40.1/85.5 shooting splits.

The University of Alabama product is expected to land a two-year contract in the neighborhood of $25-30 million, which could prove to be a bit rich for the Celtics’ blood.

It became clear in the playoffs, though, that Boston could really use a sparkplug off the bench, and Sexton would certainly provide that for Joe Mazzulla’s club.

Sexton also spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Utah Jazz, owning career averages of 18.3 points and 3.6 assists per game.
