Jonathan Kuminga remains one of the top unsigned restricted free agents as the 2025 NBA offseason enters August.

The Golden State Warriors have yet to reach an agreement with the 22-year-old forward, but league sources tell FastbreakJournal.com that one framework that has been floated is a two-year, $48 million deal that includes a player option.

The proposed structure would fall short of the $30 million annual salary range that Kuminga seeks on a long-term deal, but would enable him to opt out next summer to enter a free agency landscape that features more potential cap space teams.

However, money is far from Kuminga’s only motivation. Sources say that he seeks a more featured role in an offense to capitalize on what he believes to be All-Star potential.

Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 regular season games last season, shooting 45.4% from the field. In eight playoff appearances, he matched his scoring average but saw drops in rebounding and playmaking.

The Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns are the most notable teams that have expressed interest in a sign-and-trade this offseason, but sources have maintained that no meaningful progress has yet been achieved.

Kuminga could still accept the $7.9 million qualifying offer and hit unrestricted free agency in 2026, but doing so would risk injury and offer no long-term security. Having a player option in place for the final season of a short-term deal lacks any long-term clarity, but it would pay Kuminga much more than the qualifying offer and maintain flexibility.

Golden State’s preference is to retain Kuminga, viewing him as a valuable asset should a trade for a star next to Stephen Curry materialize. For now, talks remain at a standstill.

From a short-term perspective, sources have maintained that signing Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton is among the Warriors’ other free agency business being held up by Kuminga’s unresolved situation.
