The Denver Nuggets have been one of the top NBA Finals contenders in the Western Conference for a few years now. Most of the reason for that status has been the insane level of play from superstar center Nikola Jokic.
Jokic has a chance to go down as one of the best players of all-time in the NBA. If he continues playing at the level he has shown so far in his career, his all-time ranking will continue to rise quickly.
That being said, there are major questions about his future with the Nuggets moving forward.
He recently revealed that he will not be signing an extension with Denver this offseason. Instead, he will be open to engaging in discussions with the Nuggets next offseason. Jokic currently has the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons left on his deal and then a player option on the 2027-28 campaign.
Despite the news that Jokic doesn’t plan to engage in new contract talks this offseason, one Denver executive spoke out with a strong statement about the situation.
“No worry at all,” the executive said. “It’s the smart move from his side, if I’m being honest. He can lock in an extra year next year, which is the way to do it when you are in his position. Same offer, plus one more year, will be there for him a year now from now. He knows that, and we’re all on the same page.”
Obviously, the Nuggets are going to be offering the max amount of money they can offer regardless of when Jokic opens up to negotiations. Whether or not he wants to remain in Denver will be up to him.
During the 2024-25 NBA season, Jokic once again dominated the NBA. He played in 70 games, averaging 29.6 points per game to go along with 12.7 rebounds, 10.2 assists, and 1.8 steals. Jokic also shot 57.6 percent from the floor and connected on 41.7 percent of his three-point attempts.
It seems likely that the Nuggets and Jokic will continue their relationship moving forward. That could change, but Denver fans should not be panicking at this point in time.
