Bold headlines and more challenging questions have always accompanied Zion Williamson’s NBA story. The athletic marvel with an unmatched burst has spent six years trying to match availability with ability—and now, at 25, he’s once again at the center of a franchise crossroads with the New Orleans Pelicans.

But one voice that carries weight has stepped forward with optimism.

Joe Dumars, the Hall of Famer who was brought in to lead the Pelicans’ basketball operations in April, has been encouraged by what he recently heard from Williamson.

A Fragile Foundation for Zion Williamson is Still Intact

According to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Dumars has been “really, really impressed” with the two-time All-Star.

It’s a notable tone shift from the undercurrent of trade rumors and uncertain direction that’s followed the Pelicans since the end of last season. While Dumars has not publicly committed to any roster decisions, early signals suggest he’s willing to give Williamson the benefit of the doubt—at least for now.

Williamson’s raw numbers remain strong when he’s on the floor. He averaged 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists on 56.7% shooting during the 2024–25 campaign. But he appeared in just 30 games, the latest in a career marked more by flashes than full seasons. Since debuting in 2019, he’s played in only 214 of a possible 492 regular-season contests.

That unreliability has shaped how the Pelicans structured his five-year extension. While his $39.4 million salary for 2025–26 was fully guaranteed on July 15, the remaining years—$42.2 million and $44.9 million—hinge on games played and conditioning benchmarks. It’s a deal that protects the team financially if Williamson isn’t available while still rewarding him handsomely if he is.

Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans Face Pressure

The pressure is mutual. For Williamson, it’s about proving he can be counted on. For Dumars, it’s about deciding whether he wants to keep investing in that belief.

Within the organization, sources indicate to FastbreakJournal.com that the Pelicans are not actively exploring trade scenarios involving Williamson, though no player is believed to be truly untouchable. Dumars maintains flexibility as he shapes the roster under a new leadership structure.

The forward has drawn praise inside the building for his attitude and openness during early meetings with Dumars. The organization is watching closely to see whether that translates into a more sustainable season—and whether Dumars’ early optimism turns into long-term trust.
